Tamir won his first bout against Andrei Murashko of Belarus, 8-4. His next bout, in the round of 32, was against #1 ranked Arnd Schmitt of Germany. Tamir was defeated 15-12.

Women's Épée

Arlene won her first bout against Zahra Gamir of Algeria, 5-2. Her next bout, in the round of 32, was against top seeded Ildiko Mincza of Hungary. Although Arlene came close to defeating Mincza (Arlene was leading 6-5 in the final minute), Mincza came back to win 11-8.

Men's Foil

Cliff, the #11 seed, had a bye into the round of 32. In his first bout, Cliff defeated Ryszard Sobczak of Poland, 15-9. His opponent in the round of 16 was #5 seed Kim Young-Ho of South Korea. In a very close match that easily could have gone either way, Cliff lost 15-14. Incidentally, Kim went on to win the gold medal.

There Team USA's medal hopes disappeared in a very close match, by a final score of 45-42.
