2000 US Olympic Fencing Results

Carla-Mae Richards, US Fencing Director of Technical Programs, has provided a journal of her Olympic experience.

	Tamir Bloom Men's Épée Tamir won his first bout against Andrei Murashko of Belarus, 8-4. His next bout, in the round of 32, was against #1 ranked Arnd Schmitt of Germany. Tamir was defeated 15-12. Final placement: 29th Medalists
	Arlene Stevens Women's Épée Arlene won her first bout against Zahra Gamir of Algeria, 5-2. Her next bout, in the round of 32, was against top seeded Ildiko Mincza of Hungary. Although Arlene came close to defeating Mincza (Arlene was leading 6-5 in the final minute), Mincza came back to win 11-8. Final placement: 32nd Medalists
	Cliff Bayer Men's Foil Cliff, the #11 seed, had a bye into the round of 32. In his first bout, Cliff defeated Ryszard Sobczak of Poland, 15-9. His opponent in the round of 16 was #5 seed Kim Young-Ho of South Korea. In a very close match that easily could have gone either way, Cliff lost 15-14. Incidentally, Kim went on to win the gold medal. Final placement: 10th Medalists
	Ann Marsh Women's Foil Ann won her first bout against Shaimaa el Gammal of Egypt, 15-7. In the round of 32, Ann defeated #7 Ekaterina Ioucheva of Russia, 15-9. Her opponent in the round of 16 was #9 Reka Szofia Szabo of Romania. Ann was defeated 15-7. Final placement: 16th Medalists
	Felicia Zimmermann Women's Foil Felicia had a bye into the round of 32. In her first bout, she was defeated by Rita Koenig of Germany, 15-8. Incidentally, Koenig went on to win the silver medal. Final placement: 20th Medalists
	Iris Zimmermann Women's Foil Iris, the #13 seed, had a bye into the round of 32. In her first bout, Iris defeated Olga Charkova of Russia, 15-13. Her opponent in the round of 13 was #3 seed Giovanna Trillini of Italy. Iris was defeated 15-4. Incidentally, Trillini went on to win the bronze medal. Final placement: 11th Medalists
	Keeth Smart Men's Sabre Keeth won his first bout against Igor Tsel of Kazakhstan, 15-5. His next bout, in the round of 32, was against #2 ranked Damien Touya of France. Keeth was defeated 15-8. Final placement: 30th Medalists
	Akhnaten Spencer-El Men's Sabre Akhi's first-round bout was against Zhao Chunseng of China. Akhi was defeated 15-10. Final placement: 34th Medalists
	Women's Foil Team (Ann Marsh, Felicia Zimmermann, Iris Zimmermann, Erinn Smart - alternate) The USA Women's Foil Team was seeded #4 and had a first-round bye. In the second round, the women faced Hungary. In a tight match, the USA women advanced by a score of 45-41. In the semifinals, Team USA faced #1 seed Italy where they lost 45-38. In the bronze medal match, Team USA faced Germany. There Team USA's medal hopes disappeared in a very close match, by a final score of 45-42. Final placement: 4th Medalists
